About palisady

I'm an independent filmmaker. I write, direct, shoot and cut my projects, be it music videos, TV shows, commercials or feature films. Sometimes I will fill in as DP/cameraman for other directors, especially if they want to experiment with some new technologies. 2 years ago I fell in love with FF HDSLR. It's very hard to shoot with anything else now :)

Best Lenses for HDSLR

Almost 3 years ago I’ve started building my lens set for HDSLR.
All of these I have tested with either 550D or later 5D mkII, but eventually I’ve let them all go.

leica Summicron-r 35mm F2.0 ( summilux version is better )
leica summicron-r 50mm F2.0 ( summilux version is better )

zeiss flektogon 20mm F2.8 ( is too soft for video )
zeiss Jena tessar 50mm F2.8 ( no good too soft )
zeiss Jena tessar 50mm F2.8 zebra ( no good too soft )

helios 44-2 58mm F2 ( no good for 5D )

Voigtländer 20mm/3.5 ( nice but still soft in corners when compared to Leica 19mm )

pentacon auto 50mm F1.8 MC ( decent )
pentacon 135mm F2.8 ( lovely bokeh )

sigma 30mm F1.4 ( too soft )
SMC takumar 50mm F1.4 ( the BEST for the money – almost like Leica )

canon EF-S 18-135mm F3.5 – 5.6 IS Zoom (set – crap for video)
canon EF 50mm F1.4 ( nice – for the money )
canon EF 28mm F2.8 ( crap )
canon EF 17-40 F4 L ( too dark )
canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 ( totally useless – soft and bad bad C.A. )
canon EF 85mm F1.8 ( very nice for the money )

canon EF 100mm F2.8 IS macro L ( would still use it if need to shoot from hand )
canon EF 35mm F1.4 L ( excellent lens – more contrast and more punchy colors then Leica )
canon EF 24mm F1.4 L  ( excellent lens – more contrast and more punchy colors then Leica )

canon EF 45mm F2.8 TS  ( play lens – can use it for effect )

Since then I’ve started building Leica R set for my 5DmkII.
[ I have had my mirror removed by Canon, so i can use any lenses that would no clear the mirror, so basically I’ve turned 5D into very expensive compact 🙂 ]

19mm (ver2) f2.8 ( cut back for 5D)
24mm f2.8 ( the close focus distance is unbelievable, great for big drama shots )
35mm f1.4 ( my go to wide lens – love it )
60mm f2.8 macro ( for tight closeups – but not excellent )
80mm f1.4 ( my go to narrow lens – love it )
135mm f2.8 ( have 2 of these for cross shots with 2 camera setup )
180mm f4 ( for those loooong shots )

I’ll eventually get the 50mm f1.4 to complete the set, but I don’t personally like 50mm on FF, because it’s boring. But sometimes I work for other ppl as DP/cameraman and they may want to use it. Also in my wish list is:

Apo-Elmarit-R 11273 2,8/180mm ROM
APO-Macro-Elmarit 2.8/100mm
Apo-Summicron-R 11350 2/90mm Asph. ROM
Apo-Telyt-R 2,8/280mm

I’ve tested CP.2′s as well, but prefer Leica for the more subdued color and less contrast. If you want to see it in action check my video link http://vimeo.com/pauljanik
